The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has donated relief items to 32 students of Christ the King Catholic Senior High School whose dormitory block was destroyed by fire, helping them recover and continue their studies.

The students, all males, were in their classrooms for prep around 8 pm barely two weeks ago when news broke that their dormitory had been razed down by fire, completely destroying all their belongings. Two of the victims, upon hearing of the fire, rushed into the dormitory possibly to salvage some belongings but sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Obuasi General Hospital, where they were admitted for three days, treated and discharged.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Obuasi East, William Kofi Adzowu, on Monday, August 3, 2026, led some members of the assembly to donate the items to the victims, most of whom were in dire need.

The items included 16 metal double beds. Each student received a wooden chop box and a metal trunk filled with items, including a school uniform, stationery, beverages, boxer shorts, singlets, a shaving stick, a toothbrush and toothpaste, pomade, deodorant, a pillow, and a bed sheet.

"We are here today to fulfil the promise we made to the school when the fire incident happened," the MCE said, adding that as leaders and parents themselves, they could not hesitate to help the affected students.

"These items are meant to replace what you lost and help you concentrate fully on your studies," he told the students, while urging them to observe safety regulations and avoid using unauthorised electrical appliances and illegal connections, which could lead to future fires.

He commended personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, noting that but for their timely intervention, the inferno could have escalated to other dormitories and caused more harm.

Mr Adzowu noted that renovation works had already begun on the affected dormitory block and would soon be completed for the victims, who were currently staying with friends in the existing dormitories.

The Municipal Education Director, Kwabena Owusu Nketiah, who took delivery of the items on behalf of the school, lauded the assembly for its generosity, timely intervention and for fulfilling its promise.

"In fact, but for this intervention by the assembly, you would have been billed to pay for the damage caused to the school," he told the students.

Also present were the Assistant Headmaster in charge of Administration, Simon Agyei-Adu, some teachers, officials from the assembly, and the victims. The event coincided with a similar donation of relief items to the victims by some old students who had heard of the incident and had come to offer support to their alma mater.
