Chelsea and Manchester United supplied the fireworks as the second weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season continued on Sunday, August 30, with 16 goals scored across four matches.
While Chelsea F.C. emerged from a chaotic encounter against Brighton with their perfect record intact, Manchester United F.C. finally got their campaign moving as captain Bruno Fernandes produced a hat-trick in a 5-2 demolition of Ipswich Town.
Chelsea 4-3 Brighton: Blues make it two from two
Chelsea continued their impressive start under Xabi Alonso, but they were made to work considerably harder than expected for their second league victory.
Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro fired Chelsea into a commanding position, but Brighton refused to disappear. Malick Yalcouye struck for the visitors, Joao Pedro put through his own net and Pascal Gross also scored as the Seagulls threatened a remarkable comeback.
It ultimately fell to Cole Palmer to settle matters, with the England international finishing late to secure a breathless 4-3 victory.
The result leaves Chelsea with six points from six following their opening 3-2 victory at Fulham and represents an excellent start to Alonso’s tenure. The seven-goal contest also highlighted an obvious concern: Chelsea look extremely dangerous going forward, but conceding three at home after establishing a commanding advantage showed there remains work to do defensively.
Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich: Bruno responds in style
After the embarrassment of losing 2-0 to promoted Hull City on the opening weekend, Manchester United desperately needed a response at Old Trafford.
They got one — although not before another early scare.
Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead, raising the prospect of another miserable afternoon for United before Fernandes took control.
The Portuguese midfielder equalised before a Jacob Greaves own goal turned the match in United’s favour. Fernandes subsequently converted a penalty and completed his hat-trick, while Bryan Mbeumo also found the net in a comprehensive 5-2 victory.
Chuba Akpom scored Ipswich’s second, but it did little to alter the complexion of a match dominated by United once they found their rhythm.
United registered 33 attempts, their highest total in a Premier League match since 2016, as Michael Carrick’s side collected their first three points of the campaign.
For Fernandes individually, it was another reminder of his enormous importance to United. When his side were in danger of slipping deeper into an early-season crisis, the captain responded with three goals.
Sunderland 1-0 Fulham: Isidor makes the difference
Sunderland also collected their first victory of the new campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham at the Stadium of Light.
Substitute Wilson Isidor proved the match-winner, converting after fellow substitute Habib Diarra created the opportunity.
It was an important response for Sunderland following their opening-weekend defeat at Ipswich.
Fulham, meanwhile, are already facing uncomfortable questions after suffering a second successive defeat. Their attacking problems were particularly evident on Sunday, with the Cottagers failing to register a shot on target.
Leeds 1-1 Brentford: Calvert-Lewin rescues a point
There was nothing separating Leeds United and Brentford at Elland Road.
Kevin Schade rewarded Brentford for a strong first-half performance by putting the visitors ahead, but Leeds improved after the interval.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin eventually found the equaliser as the promoted side secured a 1-1 draw.
Brentford therefore remain unbeaten after two matches, while Leeds added another valuable point as they attempt to establish themselves back in the Premier League.

What Sunday’s results mean
Chelsea are emerging as one of the early winners of the new campaign. Two matches and two victories have given Alonso the ideal platform, although Sunday demonstrated that defensive stability could determine whether their promising start develops into a genuine title challenge.
Manchester United’s victory substantially changes the mood around Old Trafford. Their opening defeat at Hull had immediately placed Carrick’s team under pressure, but scoring five — accompanied by Fernandes’ hat-trick and a huge volume of chances — provides a much-needed confidence boost.
Sunderland are also off the mark, while Fulham are moving in the opposite direction after beginning their season with consecutive defeats.
And the biggest curiosity near the top remains promoted Hull City. Their victories over Manchester United and Coventry have left them with six points from their opening two matches alongside the early pace-setters.
The second round of Premier League fixtures is not quite finished. Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on Monday, August 31, meaning the picture at the top could change again before Matchweek Two officially closes.
