The Canadian Open 2026 trophy is up for grabs as two of the biggest names in women’s tennis, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, prepare to clash in Toronto. This also marks the pair's maiden Canadian Open final.

Swiatek defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to secure her first appearance in a WTA 1000 final in almost a year. Her last WTA Tour final appearance was in Seoul last September, when she picked up her 25th career WTA title. 

On the other side of the draw, World No. 2 Rybakina earned her spot in the final after defeating Coco Gauff 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in a hard-fought semi-final. The World No. 2 will bid for her third title this season in the final, having won the first major of the year in Melbourne and the WTA 500 event in Stuttgart, Germany.

Rybakina and Swiatek have gone through a challenging hard-court field to set up a thrilling battle at the National Bank Open. 

Previously, they have both played 12 matches against each other and have won 6 each, keeping their head-to-head record even at 6-6. 

Considering performance on outdoor hard courts, Swiatek leads the series 4-3, and she also won their only previous meeting in a final (at Doha 2024). However, their most recent encounter came at the Australian Open quarterfinals in January, where Rybakina bagged a straight-sets win.

For Rybakina, a victory would see her clinch her third WTA 1000 title, and her first since 2023. This would also push her just within four points of Sabalenka in the world rankings.

Swiatek and Rybakina are familiar with each other’s games and have developed a strong rivalry on the WTA tour so far in their career. 

Rybakina is now the fourth player in the Open Era to notch four three-set wins en route to the final at the National Bank Open, joining Lina Krasnoroutskaya (2003), Venus Williams (2014) and Bianca Andreescu (2019). She is in pursuit of her 14th WTA singles title. The Belarusian has 22 WTA 1000 main draw wins this season, the most of any player. She also has 26 wins on hard court to lead the tour.

On the other hand, Swiatek is searching for her 26th WTA singles title. She has had an inconsistent season, failing to advance beyond the quarters at ‌a Grand ⁠Slam and replacing her coach after a surprise second-round defeat by compatriot Magda Linette in Miami.

If the Polish player wins the Canadian Open title, she will become the only player with a WTA 1000 title in each of the last six seasons.

It will be a thrilling contest to see who takes over and emerges as the 2026 National Bank Open champion.

The singles champion will receive $1,085,220 and 1,000 ranking points, while the runner-up will receive $564,920 and 650 ranking points.
