Newly elected Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bernard Oko-Boye, has pledged to reunite the party and bring defeated contestants into his administration as he begins efforts to rebuild its electoral fortunes in the region.

Oko-Boye won the regional chairmanship with 490 votes against 172 secured by his opponent, Alfred Boye.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (17 August), Oko-Boye said the size of his victory showed that delegates wanted a new style of leadership that would bring the party closer to its grassroots.

He said his first priority was to understand the concerns of party members and voters and develop programmes capable of addressing them.

“I think delegates want new leadership. They want one that would be very close to them,” he said.

Oko-Boye said he planned to meet Alfred Boye and other unsuccessful aspirants shortly after the election to begin the process of uniting the regional party.

He said the meetings would be held before the end of the week.

“We need to have the energy, the resources, the passion of every single patriot in this country, every party member, so that our gains are restored in a very convincing manner,” he said.

He said the party needed to reconcile internally before attempting to persuade voters outside the party to return to the NPP.

“We have to convince our own brothers and sisters in the family to come on board before we try to go out to bring others,” he said.

The NPP suffered significant losses in Greater Accra during the 2024 general election, reducing its parliamentary representation in the region to five seats.

Oko-Boye said restoring the party’s fortunes in Greater Accra would require close engagement with both party delegates and voters.

He also pledged to work towards the return of the NPP to power in 2028 under the leadership of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
