Medeama head coach Ibrahim Tanko has expressed his readiness to lead the Black Stars if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) considers him suitable for the vacant position.

The national team is without a substantive head coach following the reported departure of Carlos Queiroz after disagreements with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

The Black Stars are expected to return to action in September when preparations begin for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Assistant coach Desmond Ofei has been mentioned among the possible candidates for the position, while Tanko has also emerged as a contender.

Tanko previously worked with the Black Stars as an assistant under former head coach Kwesi Appiah and has experience across Ghana’s national teams.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Tanko said he would welcome the opportunity if the football authorities believe he can deliver results with the national team.

“If the Black Stars coaching opportunity comes and the authorities believe I’m the right man for the job, why not?” he said.

Tanko also previously coached the Black Meteors, Ghana’s Under-23 side, although he could not lead the team to qualification for the Olympic Games.

An appointment would make the incoming coach the seventh to take charge of the Black Stars since Kurt Okraku became GFA president.

Ghana will be eager to return to the AFCON after failing to qualify for the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

The 2027 edition will be staged jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with the Black Stars set to begin their qualification campaign later this year.

For Tanko, taking charge of the senior national team would provide an opportunity to build on his previous experience with Ghana’s national sides and contribute at the highest level.
