Several parts of Ghana were plunged into darkness early Thursday following a widespread power outage that affected households, businesses and essential services across multiple regions.

In the capital Accra, communities including Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta and Oyarifa reported outages from around 4:15 a.m.

The disruption also affected parts of the Eastern, Northern, Central and Ashanti regions, with outages reported in Aburi, Tamale and other communities.

The cause of the outage was not immediately known, with the country’s power sector agencies yet to explain what triggered the disruption or indicate when electricity supply would be fully restored.

The outage is the second major disruption to Ghana’s national power system in less than a month.

On July 29, several parts of the country, including Accra, Tema, Kasoa and areas of the Ashanti and Eastern regions, experienced a similar widespread outage around the same time of day.

The latest disruption is expected to revive concerns over the stability of Ghana’s power grid and the reliability of electricity supply.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other power sector agencies had not, at the time of publication, provided details on the cause of Thursday’s outage.

Ghana has in recent years struggled with intermittent power shortages, popularly known as “dumsor”, although authorities have repeatedly said efforts are being made to strengthen the country’s electricity supply system.
