FIFA has officially sanctioned Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes following the incidents that occurred after the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.

The Boca Juniors captain has been handed a 10-match suspension and fined $90,000.

However, the punishment applies only to Argentina’s national team and will not affect his availability for Boca Juniors.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed the sanctions following the clashes that erupted after the final whistle of the match between Argentina and Spain.

Paredes, who came through Boca Juniors’ youth system, received one of the most severe punishments, with the 10-match ban applying to his appearances for the Albiceleste.

Other players were also sanctioned in connection with the post-match incidents. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina received a seven-match suspension, while Thiago Almada and Roberto Ayala were also punished. Spain midfielder Pablo Gavi received a one-match ban.

The decision means Paredes will remain eligible to represent Boca Juniors in domestic and international club competitions despite his suspension at national-team level.

For Boca, the ruling provides clarity ahead of its upcoming fixtures, as FIFA’s decision specifically limits the ban to official international matches involving Argentina.

Paredes remains sidelined with injury

Despite being cleared to continue playing for Boca, Paredes is currently unavailable because of a muscle injury sustained during the club’s match against Platense in the Torneo Clausura.

The injury forced him to miss Boca’s Copa Sudamericana return leg against Recoleta in Paraguay.

He is also expected to miss the domestic league match against Racing, with the midfielder targeting a return against Lanús.

The Lanús fixture is also expected to mark Paredes’ return to La Bombonera after Boca were forced to play their home matches at the Ducó.
