Leandro Paredes was at the center of a controversy after a heated physical altercation between the Argentine and Spanish players following the World Cup final.

The 32-year-old had grabbed Spain’s Eric García by the throat and pushed substitute Gavi to the ground following a verbal provocation.

The incident sparked a larger scuffle involving several other players and led to a disciplinary investigation by FIFA.

Paredes has now reportedly been handed a 10-match ban for violent conduct.

In addition, the governing body handed Nahuel Molina a seven-match suspension. Both players were also fined $90,000.

Argentina staff member Roberto Ayala was handed a three-match ban as well and fined $30,000, while Spain’s Gavi received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine for his involvement.

FIFA Issues Fine on AFA

Another incident investigated by FIFA involved Argentina’s match against England, during which several Argentine players displayed a banner claiming Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

As a result, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) was fined $321,000 for violating FIFA’s disciplinary code.

Of the total fine, $100,000 will be directed toward efforts to combat discrimination, while another $100,000 of the penalty has been suspended.

Argentina will also be required to play its next matches at 50% stadium capacity.

Lionel Messi and co. faced significant criticism throughout the World Cup following allegations of referee bias from fans and opposing teams.

One of the other controversial moments came when Egypt filed a formal complaint against the officials following its 3-2 loss to the defending champions.
