The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aduana Football Club, Collins Atta Poku, has described the Ghana Football Association’s proposed financial support for Premier League clubs as one of the most significant and transformative initiatives in the history of the association.

The GFA announced a new financial and incentive package during its 32nd Ordinary Congress on Thursday at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, which includes a base payment of GH¢1 million to every top-flight club to support team operations and improve financial stability.

Mr Poku said the reported GH¢1 million support package for each of the 18 Ghana Premier League clubs would provide much-needed financial relief to teams struggling to meet the rising cost of running competitive sides.

“I would say this is the single most significant and transformative declaration by the FA president in his entire tenure. Now, there has to be consistency,” he said.

According to Mr Poku, clubs benefited from a similar GH¢1 million payment during the previous season, but uncertainty over whether the support would continue has made financial planning difficult for clubs preparing for the new campaign.

“Clubs took their money last season; we took 1 million Ghana cedis, and coming here today, we are not even certain that we are going to receive another support or cushion for the upcoming season.”

Mr Poku believes the direct injection of GH¢1 million into each Premier League club could significantly ease the financial burden on teams, particularly those operating with limited resources.

“Putting money directly into the pocket of Aduana Football Club and 17 other Premier League clubs, 1 million Ghana cedis, is very, very significant and transformative. You take away some of the burden that we face.”

He said the impact would be particularly substantial for clubs such as Aduana FC, where the proposed support could cover a considerable portion of the club’s annual operating budget.

“For Aduana, like this, we could say that about a third of our budget would be taken care of if we get 1 million Ghana cedis. It’s significant.”

The proposed GH¢1 million payment forms part of a wider GH¢9.5 million financial and incentive package for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, including GH¢3 million for the champions, GH¢1 million for the runners-up, and additional rewards for third and fourth place.

The new football season is scheduled to kick off on September 5.
