TheGhana Grid Company (GRIDCo) says electricity supply has been fully restored to all areas affected by Thursday’s nationwide system disturbance.

GRIDCo said restoration was completed at 12:03 p.m. on Thursday, 20 August 2026, after engineers and technical teams across the power sector worked to restore supply following the disruption.

“The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the public that power supply to all affected areas has been fully restored following the system disturbance that occurred on Thursday, 20 August 2026,” the company said in a statement issued on Friday.

The disturbance caused widespread power outages across parts of the country after a fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and several thermal generating plants.

GRIDCo said the restoration process began immediately, with its engineers and other power-sector technical teams working to reconnect affected areas.

The company thanked the public and other stakeholders for their cooperation during the restoration process.

It also said it would continue implementing measures aimed at strengthening the reliability, stability and resilience of Ghana’s transmission network.

GRIDCo’s latest statement did not provide further details on the cause of the system disturbance or the outcome of its technical investigation into the incident.

The disruption affected several parts of the country, including Greater Accra, Eastern, Northern, Central and Ashanti regions, renewing concerns over the resilience of Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

GRIDCo operates the National Interconnected Transmission System and is responsible for the transmission and economic dispatch of electricity from wholesale suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities in Ghana and the wider West African power system.
