Former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson, has officially declared her intention to contest the position of National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a Facebook post, the aspiring National Women’s Organiser said she visited NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at his residence with her campaign team before submitting her nomination at the party’s headquarters.

Hawa Koomson says her decision to contest the position of National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aimed at building a stronger, more organised and dynamic Women’s Wing ahead of the 2028 general elections.

She said her visit to NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was to formally communicate her decision to contest the position and outline her vision for the party’s women’s wing.

According to Madam Koomson, the NPP is at a critical juncture, with the party’s next leadership expected to play a key role in determining its future and the direction of Ghana’s democracy.

She criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that the government is taking the country in the wrong direction.

“Our party stands at a pivotal moment; the upcoming leadership will be vital for the survival of our democracy, our party, and our nation. The current government, led by the NDC, is steering Ghana toward uncertain waters, leaving the citizens with little hope for the future. It is imperative that the NPP steps in to rectify this trajectory.”

Madam Koomson said the NPP Women’s Wing would be central to the party’s efforts to return to power, but stressed that this would require bold and courageous leadership.

“The Women’s Wing of the NPP holds a fundamental role in this rescue mission. However, fulfilling this role demands bold, assertive, and courageous leadership to galvanize our efforts towards a victorious outcome in 2028.”

She said her decision to contest was not motivated by a desire to occupy a position, but by a commitment to lead a well-organised and dynamic women’s wing capable of mobilising support for the party ahead of the 2028 elections.

“My ambition is not merely to occupy a position but to spearhead an organized and dynamic women’s wing that is fully equipped to secure victory for the NPP and for H. E. Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Madam Koomson described her bid as a commitment to the party and called on NPP supporters, particularly women, to join her campaign.

“This is my solemn commitment to you, and I wholeheartedly invite you to join me on this journey. Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for a brighter future for Ghana.”
