NBA 2K HQ Face Scan: How to Scan Your Face for NBA 2K27

Most bad MyPLAYER faces come down to two things 2K puts in writing: how far you hold the phone and where the light is coming from.

NBA 2K HQ Face Scan: How to Scan Your Face for NBA 2K27

The NBA 2K HQ app is out and it has a few different uses for players. The new app replaces MyNBA 2K and it’s now the app players will use to scan their face for their MyPlayers. Here’s a breakdown of how to scan your face best in the new app.

Two numbers do most of the work, and both come straight from 2K. Hold the phone at eye level, roughly 18 inches from your face, and turn your head slowly to a maximum of 45 degrees while your eyes stay forward. The app screen turns green when the framing is right, so use that as your signal rather than guessing.

Your lighting instinct is exactly what 2K asks for. The official guidance is even light from the front, no backlight and no shadows across the face, against a plain uncluttered background. Natural light does all of that for free, which is why it beats a ceiling fixture throwing shadows down your nose.

The part most people miss is that a bad scan is not permanent. 2K says previous scans can become corrupted and that redoing the scan clears the corruption, and you can edit an existing one from MyPLAYER Appearance at any point. If you are already deep in a save, go to Appearance and hit Scan Your Face to apply a new one without starting over.

One question we could not answer from official documentation. 2K does not state whether the front or rear camera is used, and the setup it describes, phone at eye level with the screen giving you a green framing signal, only works facing you. Treat it as the front camera until 2K says otherwise.

We cannot express this more seriously, lighting is huge. You’ll get a scan most times, but getting a good one is highly dependent on lighting. Go for natural light if you can get it.

Steps and specifications below follow NBA 2K’s official face scan documentation.

The fixes below combine 2K’s own guidance with troubleshooting steps compiled by The Nerd Stash during an earlier NBA 2K cycle.

NBA 2K HQ Face Scan Troubleshooting

Problem

What To Try

The scan will not start

Confirm you are on the current version of NBA 2K HQ from the App Store or Google Play

The app will not recognize your face

Remove glasses, hats and anything else covering your face or hairline

The screen never turns green

Change your lighting first, then your angle. Wipe the camera lens

The scan captures but looks wrong

Redo it. 2K says a previous scan can become corrupted and rescanning clears it

Your MyPLAYER looks wrong in an existing save

Go to MyPLAYER Appearance and select Edit on your face scan

The head builder hangs partway through

Restart the process, then watch for a patch if it repeats

Nothing above works
