Announced at the beginning of 2026, the Nike Mind 001 is one of Nike’s strangest and most interesting footwear projects in recent history.

Unlike any other shoes Nike has ever produced, the Mind 001 is a $95 neuroscience mule slide, the first of its kind, a product that took 10 years to develop via Nike’s Mind Science program, which was created to explore the connection between our feet, nervous systems, and brains.

Nike said it was launching this new type of shoe to help athletes lock in their mindset.

“For 45 years, Nike has studied the body in motion — how muscles fire, how joints move, how oxygen fuels performance,” said Dr. Matthew Nurse, Nike’s VP and Chief Science Officer. “Now, we’re expanding into the mind. By studying perception, attention and sensory feedback, we’re tapping into the brain-body connection in new ways. It’s not just about running faster — it’s about feeling more present, focused and resilient. That’s the next frontier of performance.”

The only problem? Hardly anyone has been able to buy them up until this point, at least for the retail price. That’s because the minute they’ve gone on sale, they’ve sold out almost instantly.

Originally debuting on January 8th, the first drop sold out in minutes. The same thing happened in March, May, and August.

Why Are Nike Mind 001 Mules So Hard to Get?

While the Nike Mind 001 debuted in January, the rollout of the shoes thus far has been very limited in 2026.

Since overall production numbers have remained relatively small compared to Nike’s standard releases, the Nike Mind 001 has remained one of the hardest $95 pickups on the market.

But is it the science of the shoes that makes them so popular? Or just the scarcity?

Admittedly, the science does seem very cool.

The core of the technology revolves around 22 independent foam nodes built into the outsole. These nodes function like miniature pistons and gimbals, each compressing vertically and tilting laterally as you walk.

Nike’s Mind Science team says that mapping these sensors sends distinct signals to the brain, which helps athletes transition into a focused state before competition.

Nike explains, “Leveraging one of the very few mobile brain and body imaging labs in the world, the Mind Science Department’s neuroscientists study the nervous system, brain activity and cognition of athletes in motion — leading to unique insights informing a completely new category of products and services to help athletes better prepare, train, compete and recover.”

All that makes the Nike Mind 001 one of the most technologically advanced pieces of footwear ever produced, at least on paper.

So yeah, the technology is a big reason why they’re so hard to get right now.

But let’s face it. The scarcity of the shoes helps too.

The Verdict: Should You Try to Buy the Nike Mind 001?

The Google Review rating for the Nike Mind 001 is 4.6 stars out of five.

That means the few people who have actually been able to buy these Nike shoes during this limited release schedule have ended up happy with their purchases. About the only repeated complaint I’ve seen is that they tend to run small, so ordering a full size up is recommended.

But should you buy them? The answer is certainly “yes” if you are interested in trying out the latest in footwear technology from Nike.

The trick, of course, will be scoring them for retail before they’re all sold out again.
