Atlanta Braves at Milwaukee Brewers NRFI (-170)

You’d be hard-pressed to find a pitching matchup with more dominant first-inning numbers. They’re also probably the two battling it out for the NL Cy Young Award. The Braves are going with LHP Chris Sale, who’s 12-8 with a 2.16 ERA. He has a 1.23 ERA and 28 K’s in 22 first frames. The Brewers go with RHP Jacob Misiorowski, who is 12-5 with a 1.75 ERA. The Miz has a 1.96 ERA and a whopping 45 K’s in 23 first frames this season.

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies NRFI (-TBD)

Rookie RHP Hunter Dobbins goes for the Cards at 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA. He only has seven starts, but he has been pretty good in the first with a 3.86 ERA, a .200 opponents’ batting average and 8 K’s. Phillies LHP Jesus Luzardo doesn’t get talked about enough, which is a testament to what RHP Zack Wheeler and LHP Cristopher Sanchez have done in the same rotation. Luzardo is 11-5 with a 3.23 ERA and an 11.1 K/9. The first inning? Forget about it. He hasn’t allowed an earned run with 30 K’s in 25 first frames.

Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins YRFI (-105)

RHP Brad Lord goes for the Nats at 5-2 with a 4.04 ERA. He has made 30 appearances this season, but this is just his fourth start. His first-inning numbers are messy with a 6.75 ERA and five walks. Clearly, the change in his routine doesn’t bode well for him. The Marlins go with RHP Ryan Gusto, who is 0-3 with a 4.70 ERA. He has gone back and forth from the pen to the rotation, and his numbers as a starter aren’t as good with a 4.87 ERA as opposed to 3.86 in the pen. His first-inning ERA is 4.09.

What Do NRFI and YRFI Mean in Baseball?

The term NRFI indicates no runs scored in the first inning. Its opposite, YRFI, indicates yes, there will be a run in the first inning. It doesn’t matter if the run qualifies as an earned run or not. If a run crosses the plate in the first inning for either team, the wager loses for the NRFI side and wins for the YRFI side.
