While the Indiana Fever defeated the Dallas Wings in their showdown last week, it was a different story when they met again on Thursday.

Caitlin Clark struggled in the game and recorded just 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting, as Indiana lost 91-85. Furthermore, the Fever didn’t get a lot of production from their bench, with their second unit scoring only four points.

Kelsey Mitchell exploded for a game-high 37 points, but it was not enough to counter Arike Ogunbowale and Jessica Shepard who combined for 58 points for Dallas.

If there was one player who gave the Fever plenty of problems, however, it was none other than forward Awak Kuier.

Kuier scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, along with eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. However, her rim protection really made life difficult for Indiana. The 25-year-old tallied seven blocks, five of which came in the first half.

After the game, head coach Stephanie White even name-dropped Kuier as she talked about what went wrong for the Fever in the loss.

“I thought we were a step slow in our rotations, you know,” White said. “And then for us, I mean, Awak, she kept us from scoring in the paint. I don’t know how many blocks she ended up with, but I think she had five in the first half.”

White added, “They have great length. … They did a great job of shelling us, forcing us into a crowd, and not allowing us to see some easy, open teammates. We got to watch the film and we got to be better.”

While White also mentioned Ogunbowale, who scored 25 points in the second half to prevent the Fever from staging a comeback, there’s no denying that Kuier’s activity on the defensive end was the difference-maker for Dallas.

The Fever boast the best offensive rating in the WNBA, and they would have probably dominated and gained momentum if not for Kuier’s crucial stops.

For what it’s worth, Kuier’s seven blocks are the most in a single game in Wings history, according to ESPN Insights.
