Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, has reassured fans and stakeholders that Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania are fully prepared to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), amid recent doubts over stadium readiness.

His statement follows a CAF inspection report which revealed that several of the proposed stadiums across the three nations did not meet the required standards to host continental matches.

Uganda, part of the East Africa Pamoja bid alongside Kenya and Tanzania, faced particular scrutiny. Inspectors noted that Hoima City Stadium lacks proper spectator arrangements, dressing rooms, and media facilities, while Mandela National Stadium requires major upgrades, especially in the West Stand and other critical areas.

Speaking at a press conference in , Motsepe expressed optimism, pointing to past tournaments that overcame similar doubts.

“In 2023, many people wanted Ivory Coast to be stripped of hosting rights, but the tournament was a success. I have faith in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to deliver,” he said on Sunday.

Motsepe also confirmed plans to intensify engagement with the host nations, including a visit to Kenya in the coming months.

“I’ll be visiting Kenya in May. Although I hadn’t planned to, the heads-of-state meeting, my strong ties with leaders, and next year’s major tournament made it important,” he added.

In addition, the CAF President announced that the AFCON tournament format will be expanded to include 28 teams, organised into seven groups of four.

The announcement underscores CAF’s confidence in East Africa’s ability to host the continent’s premier football championship and reflects ongoing preparations to meet international standards.
