Former Black Stars Management Committee member Kudjoe Fianoo has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to appoint technical director Winfried Schäfer on an interim basis to lead the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The call comes as the GFA searches for a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo after the March international break.

The decision to part ways with Addo followed a difficult run of results, including a 5–1 defeat to Austria in Vienna and a 2–1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart.

Speaking in an interview with Kessben Sports, Fianoo argued that handing Schäfer temporary charge would provide stability while the association takes time to identify a long-term solution.

He noted that the technical director already has experience within Ghana’s football structure and understands the dynamics of the national setup.

“The technical director at the GFA understands the Ghanaian terrain, so I’ll suggest we give him the national team to handle on an interim basis while we take our time to look for a new coach,” he said.

Fianoo added that time constraints make an urgent appointment necessary, warning against rushing into another long-term decision without due diligence.

He stressed the need for a coach who can build a sustainable project across short, medium and long-term cycles, rather than frequent changes in leadership.

Several international coaches, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, and Fernando Santos, have been linked with the vacant position.

The GFA is expected to announce a new head coach in the coming days as the Black Stars prepare for upcoming international friendlies against Mexico in May and Wales on 2 June.

Ghana will then begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama on 17 June, before facing England and Croatia in Group G, as they aim to improve on previous group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
