The Ministry of Health has announced that its upcoming Free Primary Healthcare programme is designed to address Ghana’s persistent “no-bed syndrome” by reducing pressure on hospitals through early detection and community-based care.

The Ministry says it has completed key stakeholder engagements and put in place the necessary structures ahead of the rollout of the initiative.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday (11 April), the Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, said the programme seeks to redirect healthcare delivery from hospitals to communities in a bid to ease congestion at major health facilities.

According to him, many of the challenges associated with bed shortages stem from patients reporting late with conditions that could have been managed earlier.

He explained that the new approach will focus on identifying illnesses at an early stage and supporting patients to manage them before they escalate into emergencies.

“We are moving healthcare closer to the people, so that cases are detected and managed early, rather than waiting until patients require hospital admission,” he said.

Goodman added that the initiative is aimed at improving access to care while reducing the number of emergency cases that often overwhelm hospitals.

He noted that the programme will prioritise preventive and promotive healthcare, including community-level screening, public education and early intervention.

The Ministry believes that by shifting attention to primary healthcare, the programme will significantly reduce congestion at hospitals and help address the long-standing issue of patients being turned away due to lack of beds.

The Free Primary Healthcare programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system and improve service delivery across the country.
