The Bono regional chairman and leading voice of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe (“Abronye DC”) has been released on bail after spending hours in police custody.

This follows an intervention by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, and the NPP legal team.

Abronye was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday (13 April) over allegations including offensive conduct, false publication and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

He was also being investigated over alleged threats directed at a judge at the Adenta Circuit Court, police sources said.

The release of Abronye follows mounting political pressure led by the Minority Leader, who had urged police to grant him immediate bail, arguing that continued detention was “unfair” and should be guided by constitutional provisions.

In a parallel development, another Bono-based NPP communicator in detention, identified as Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as “Baba Amando”, was also granted bail, according to party sources.

Lawyers for both Baba Amando and Abronye reportedly engaged police officials throughout the day to secure their release, pending further investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has not yet issued a detailed statement confirming the conditions of bail but said investigations into the allegations are still ongoing.
