Ghana Premier League side Berekum Chelsea said its team bus was attacked by armed robbers on a highway in the country’s western belt, leaving one player seriously injured.
The club said in a statement that the incident occurred on Sunday (12 April) while the team was returning to Berekum from Samreboi, when a group of masked men blocked the road.
According to the club, the attackers, armed with guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse.
Players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover during the incident.
“One of our players is badly injured and is receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital,” the club said, adding that arrangements were being made to transfer the player to a regional facility.
The club expressed gratitude to a police patrol team for its swift response, as well as to residents of Ashiresu who provided temporary shelter.
Officials of Bibiani Gold Stars and the Ghana Football Association were also commended for their support following the attack.
Police have not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
