Wontumi seeks blessing of Bawumia, Akufo-Addo for NPP chairmanship ambition

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, on Wednesday intensified his campaign for the party’s national chairmanship position with courtesy calls on former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ahead of the NPP’s upcoming national executive elections.

Chairman Wontumi, accompanied by members of his campaign team, said the visits formed part of broader stakeholder engagements following his decision to contest for the position of National Chairman when nominations officially open.

According to a statement issued by his campaign team, Wontumi used the meetings to express appreciation to both leaders for what he described as their sacrifices and continued commitment to rebuilding the party after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He also formally informed the two statesmen of his intention to seek the chairmanship position, saying his ambition was rooted in “service, unity, grassroots mobilisation, and the collective rebuilding of the Party.”

The outspoken regional chairman assured the former leaders that his campaign would remain “disciplined, respectful and issue-based,” and would avoid personal attacks or activities capable of deepening divisions within the party.

The engagement comes as the NPP begins internal reorganisation efforts following its loss of power in 2024, with several leading figures positioning themselves ahead of anticipated national executive contests and the party’s rebuilding process toward the 2028 elections.

Wontumi, who has served multiple terms as Ashanti Regional Chairman, is regarded as one of the party’s most influential grassroots mobilisers, particularly within the NPP’s stronghold in the Ashanti Region.

His campaign team said discussions during the meetings also focused on reconciliation, inclusiveness and strengthening party structures ahead of the next election cycle.

The team further sought the guidance and goodwill of both Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia as the internal contest approaches, while reaffirming commitment to party unity and stability throughout the process.

The stakeholder engagements, the statement added, will continue across the country as part of efforts to promote grassroots reorganisation and reposition the NPP for the 2028 general elections.
