A severe rainstorm has damaged homes and displaced dozens of residents in parts of the Central Region, prompting emergency officials to launch relief and recovery operations, authorities said on Sunday.
The storm struck communities in Assin Akrofuom and Assin Anyinabrim in the Assin South District, damaging residential and public infrastructure and disrupting livelihoods.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said at least 12 residential buildings, several public structures and key utility facilities were affected by the storm, forcing about 55 people from their homes.
Emergency officials said the destruction caused temporary displacement and localised economic disruption in the affected communities.
Regional and district disaster management officials were deployed to the area to conduct rapid damage assessments and coordinate response efforts with the district assembly, traditional leaders and emergency services.
Authorities said immediate efforts were focused on relocating affected families to safe locations, providing psychosocial support and assessing humanitarian needs.
Officials also began gathering field data to support the distribution of relief items and develop recommendations for safer rebuilding and rehabilitation.
The agency said residents had been sensitised on disaster prevention measures, including stronger roof reinforcement and avoiding vulnerable structures and large trees during severe weather conditions.
Heavy rains and storms have periodically caused destruction in parts of Ghana, especially during peak rainy seasons, with emergency agencies repeatedly warning communities about the risks associated with extreme weather events.
