The National Health Insurance Authority has appealed to journalists to support public education on its newly introduced “One-Time Attendance Code” (OTAC) initiative to ensure its effectiveness and long-term sustainability in improving healthcare delivery across the country.

The initiative, currently being piloted in Goaso in the Ahafo Region, forms part of the government’s free primary healthcare programme aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services for Ghanaians.

Speaking to Adom News, the Head of Communication and Corporate Affairs at the NHIA, Faustina Dery, said the media has a critical role to play in helping the public understand the purpose and benefits of the OTAC system.

According to her, the initiative has been specifically designed by the NHIA to support the implementation of the free primary healthcare programme and ensure efficient healthcare service delivery.

She noted that journalists can contribute significantly to the success of the programme through continuous public education and awareness creation.

“The free primary healthcare programme is a game changer when it comes to healthcare delivery in the country, therefore there is the need for all stakeholders, including the media, to play a major role in ensuring its effectiveness and sustainability,” she stated.

Ms. Dery further disclosed that the NHIA is currently performing well in the payment of claims to service providers, which she said demonstrates government’s commitment to prioritising the healthcare needs of Ghanaians.

She expressed optimism that the OTAC pilot programme in the Asunafo North Municipality would be successful and eventually expanded to other parts of the country.
