Former Vice President and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has urged party Members of Parliament to shift focus from internal reflection to preparing the party for a return to government.

Addressing NPP lawmakers as Parliament resumed on Thursday (21 May), Bawumia said the party had moved past what he described as a period of introspection and must now position itself as a government-in-waiting ahead of the 2029 elections.

He said every message and parliamentary intervention should be framed around how it resonates with ordinary Ghanaians and strengthens the party’s governing credentials.

“We are no longer healing, we are preparing to govern,” he said, according to remarks shared from the meeting.

Bawumia urged MPs to ensure that their contributions in the House reflect discipline, consistency and a clear sense of national direction.

He added that the party must project unity and readiness, stressing that political communication should be focused on governance and public expectations rather than internal debates.

The NPP flagbearer also encouraged lawmakers to treat parliamentary proceedings as an opportunity to demonstrate competence in statecraft and policy formulation.

He said decisions and contributions in Parliament should be guided by how they answer the concerns of ordinary citizens.

Bawumia further stated that the party’s goal was to present itself as a credible alternative government capable of taking office in January 2029.
