Ghana risks a deepening food security crisis as farmers abandon production amid mounting post-harvest losses and collapsing market demand, a civil society leader has warned.

Samuel Doku of theCentre for Democratic Movement described the current food glut as a “governance failure” driven by poor infrastructure, weak market systems and declining purchasing power.

Farmers are reporting bumper harvests of maize, beans and other staples — but much of it is going to waste due to lack of buyers.

“A bag of maize that used to sell for 1,000 to 1,400 cedis is now going for 400 to 600, yet people are not buying,” Doku said on theAsaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (26 May).

He attributed the demand slump partly to reduced consumer incomes, warning that the imbalance between supply and purchasing power is crippling rural livelihoods.

The fallout is already severe: some farmers are threatening to quit agriculture altogether, while others are selling land to illegal miners.

“They are saying it is better to sell their lands to galamsey operators just to survive,” he said.

Doku warned that such trends could have long-term consequences for national food production, noting that roughly 40 percent of Ghanaians depend on farming.

“If farmers leave the sector, who will produce food for the country?” he asked.

He called on authorities to urgently address road networks, storage infrastructure and farmer incentives, arguing that both policy design and implementation gaps are to blame.
