Former sports minister Mustapha Ussif on Tuesday denied wrongdoing after an Auditor-General’s report recommended that he and other officials be held liable for the recovery of more than 579 million Ghana cedis linked to alleged irregularities in the 2023 All-African Games.
The audit report cited alleged irregularities including inflated costs, unsupported payments, undelivered goods and contractual breaches linked to expenditure on catering, transport, accommodation, procurement and infrastructure projects.
It also recommended the recovery of more than $44 million and 629,070 euros from individuals connected to the organisation of the Games.
Ussif, a member of parliament for Yagaba/Kubori, denied responsibility for any wrongdoing.
“I however deny being responsible for any such irregularities, if any at all,” he said in a statement.
He said he expected the report to be presented to parliament, where individuals named in the findings would have the opportunity to respond.
The Auditor-General’s findings also raised concerns over projects linked to the Borteyman Sports Complex, the University of Ghana Stadium and the Legon Sports Village.
The report recommended that the officials cited be held jointly liable for the recovery of the flagged amounts.
