Pupils and teachers of Akyem Pano Presbyterian Basic School in Akyem Pano on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, staged a peaceful demonstration through the principal streets of the community to protest against the repeated defecation in their classrooms by unidentified individuals.

Dressed in red armbands and carrying placards with messages such as “The Kids Are Tired of Scrubbing Toilets Every Morning” and “Stop Defecating in Our Classroom,” the pupils marched through the town chanting solidarity songs while calling for immediate intervention to end what they described as a serious public health threat affecting teaching and learning.

According to residents and school authorities, the disturbing incidents have persisted for some time despite several complaints made to community stakeholders, opinion leaders, and the Municipal Education Directorate.

Residents expressed shock that some individuals continue to use the classrooms as places of defecation even though a functional public toilet facility is located behind the school.

Community members say the repeated acts, which also reportedly involve breaking classroom doors at night, have become a major challenge to academic work, as pupils and teachers are often forced to clean human waste from classrooms before lessons can begin.

Speaking during the protest, PTA Chairman Alhaji Issah Alhassan, popularly known as Shaibu Tettey, described the situation as unacceptable and said it has become a serious concern for both pupils and staff.

He warned that anyone found loitering around the school premises after 7:00 p.m. would face legal action and also cautioned individuals using the school compound as a sleeping place to stop immediately.

The Headmistress of the school Madam Darko Kyerewaa said the demonstration was necessary to highlight the hardship pupils and teachers face each morning due to the repeated cleaning of human waste before academic activities commence.

She appealed to authorities, community leaders, and the public to respond swiftly to the concerns raised by the school and help restore a safe, clean, and conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
