John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghana’s youth to steer clear of drug abuse and other negative influences, warning that such habits could undermine both their personal ambitions and the country’s development.

Delivering his Eid al-Adha message at Independence Square on Wednesday, Mahama called on young people to prioritise discipline, hard work and responsibility, describing them as essential pillars for national progress.

“I especially encourage our young people to remain disciplined, law-abiding, respectful and responsible citizens,” the President said. “I urge you to also avoid drug addiction. Our nation needs young people who are focused on education, skills, hard work, entrepreneurship and service to humanity.”

Mahama used the occasion to underscore the role of moral leadership in fostering social cohesion, pointing to Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu as a national example of humility and peacebuilding.

“We are blessed to have the enduring example of our revered National Chief Imam… whose life continues to inspire all Ghanaians through his humility, compassion, simplicity, tolerance and peacebuilding,” he said, urging citizens to emulate those values.

The President further stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence across religious and political divides, noting that Ghana’s stability depends on shared values of tolerance and mutual respect.

His remarks come amid growing concern over substance abuse among young people and its broader implications for public health, security and economic productivity.
