Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor has been crowned Kenya’s Coach of the Season after leading Gor Mahia to a record-extending 22nd Kenyan Premier League title.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak head coach masterminded a remarkable campaign, restoring Gor Mahia to the summit of Kenyan football and further strengthening the club’s status as the country’s most successful side.

Gor Mahia secured the championship with two matches remaining after title rivals AFC Leopards suffered a 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet.

The result left AFC Leopards four points behind the leaders with only one fixture left to play, confirming Gor Mahia as champions.

Since taking charge in August 2025, Akonnor has overseen a dramatic turnaround at the club, guiding them to domestic success in less than a year.

His backroom staff includes assistant coach Bismark Kobi Mensah, goalkeepers’ trainer Ben Owu and video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo.

Several Ghanaian players also played key roles in the title-winning campaign, including Enock Morrison, George Amonoo, Ebenezer Adukwaw and Ebenezer Assifuah, whose contributions proved crucial throughout the season.

Midfielder Enock Morrison was further recognised for his impressive performances by receiving the Midfielder of the Season award.

Gor Mahia ended the campaign at the top of the league table with 68 points, and Akonnor’s success naturally earned him the league’s highest individual coaching accolade.

The award adds another milestone to the Ghanaian coach’s growing résumé and sets the stage for a new challenge as he prepares to lead Gor Mahia in next season’s CAF Champions League campaign.
