A teacher at Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region has been arrested after a viral video appeared to show him physically assaulting a female student, authorities said Tuesday.

The footage, widely circulated on social media, shows the teacher repeatedly striking the student before lifting her and throwing her to the ground as bystanders pleaded with him to stop.

The arrest was confirmed by the Ghana Education Service (GES), which said the matter was under investigation.

“The Nyinahini Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student [has been] arrested. Regional education directorate is investigating the matter.

“Full report to be submitted to headquarters,” GES Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi said in a social media post.

In the video, witnesses can be heard urging the teacher to remember that the victim was a girl and to refrain from attacking her. The teacher, who appeared visibly agitated, responded by asking, “Is she aware she is a lady?”

Authorities have not disclosed what triggered the confrontation.

The GES said the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate had launched an inquiry and would submit its findings to the agency’s national headquarters.

The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with many Ghanaians demanding accountability and stronger protections for students within educational institutions.
