Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama on Friday called for a reset in relations with the European Union, urging a shift away from traditional aid towards a partnership anchored in trade, investment and industrialisation.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Ghana-European Union Partnership Dialogue in Accra, Mahama said both sides must pursue a more strategic and equitable relationship that delivers shared prosperity and sustainable development.

“The time has come to move beyond aid and towards a partnership built on mutual interests in trade, investment, innovation and industrial growth,” he said.

Mahama noted that evolving global challenges — including economic uncertainty, climate change and rapid technological change — make stronger international cooperation increasingly critical.

The dialogue brought together officials from Ghana and the EU to deliberate on key areas including governance, trade and investment, security, climate action, migration, digital transformation and sustainable development.

Mahama said Ghana’s objective is not only to sustain existing cooperation with the bloc but to elevate relations to a higher level that supports long-term economic transformation.

The Ghana-EU Partnership Dialogue forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral ties and align priorities in an increasingly complex global environment.
