Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has praised the Black Stars’ defensive organisation following their goalless draw with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s backline, set up under head coach Carlos Queiroz, has emerged as one of the standout defensive units at the tournament, yet to concede a goal after two matches.

Despite facing 30 shots across their opening fixtures, the Black Stars remain among only four teams still unbeaten defensively, underlining their resilience at the back.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Lamptey highlighted the growing understanding between centre-backs Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku, noting the rapid progress of the pairing on the global stage.

“I was surprised when the two centre-backs were paired. This is their first tournament. They fumbled in their first game, but yesterday they were superb. Gideon has the experience. The back four was solid,” he said.

Lamptey also reserved praise for goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, saying his performances have not come as a surprise given his consistency at club level with Hearts of Oak.

“I’m not surprised Benjamin Asare is doing well in the national team; he has worked hard for this,” he added.

The draw against England leaves Ghana in a strong position in Group L and on the brink of qualification for the Round of 32 ahead of their final group fixture.

The Black Stars will face Croatia on Saturday, June 27, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 GMT.
