The Ngleshie Lafa Mantse, who also serves as the Asafoatse of Weija, Nii Ayi Okufuobour, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the government’s flood mitigation task force to demolish all structures built on waterways to help address the recurring flooding situation across the country.

Nii Ayi Okufuobour commended President Mahama for establishing the task force to tackle illegal structures on waterways, describing the initiative as timely following the devastating floods that affected several parts of the country after recent heavy rains.

He urged the task force to enforce the law without fear or favour, stressing that no individual should be spared if they have illegally constructed buildings on waterways.

The traditional leader made the call after personally hiring an excavator to desilt choked and abandoned drains at Weija Junction along the Accra–Kasoa Highway as part of efforts to prevent future flooding.

Nii Ayi Okufuobour also appealed to Ghanaians to stop dumping refuse into gutters and water bodies, warning that the practice contributes to flooding and increases the risk of disease outbreaks.

He encouraged citizens to develop a strong culture of environmental cleanliness and work together to keep the country clean and beautiful, similar to standards maintained in many developed countries.
