The Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ghana, Pavel Bílek, was among the dignitaries who joined residents of Elmina in the Central Region to celebrate this year’s Bakatue Festival.

The ambassador attended the centuries-old festival as the Guest of Honour, taking part in the colourful cultural celebration that marks the official opening of the Benya Lagoon and the beginning of the fishing season.

The event brought together traditional leaders, residents and visitors to celebrate the rich heritage, customs and community spirit of the historic coastal town through traditional rites, music and cultural displays.

A notable feature of this year’s celebration was the display of several Czech flags across parts of Elmina, reflecting the long-standing relationship between the Czech Republic and the community.

According to the Czech Embassy in Accra, the strong Czech presence in Elmina has been built over the years through business partnerships, development cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

The embassy also acknowledged the warm reception accorded the ambassador, expressing appreciation to local chief of Czech origin, David Duron, known traditionally as Nana Ekow Ankama I, as well as the people of Elmina for their hospitality.

The annual Bakatue Festival remains one of Ghana’s most celebrated traditional festivals, attracting both local and international visitors while showcasing the culture and history of the people of Elmina.
