The Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take tough action against indiscipline in schools, saying misconduct by students, teachers and school administrators threatens the country’s education system.

Speaking at the National Schools Awards (GALOP Edition 2026) on Thursday (9 July), Iddrisu said indiscipline had become a widespread problem affecting every level of the education sector.

“Indiscipline involving learners and students, headmasters, and indiscipline generally as a Ghanaian disease. We need to work at it,” he said.

The minister said the trend undermined discipline, academic integrity and educational standards and required decisive intervention.

Iddrisu said the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service had the government’s backing to take firm action against offenders.

“The Director-General of GES is today empowered under President Mahama’s Reset Agenda to deal forcefully with any act of indiscipline in our schools,” he said.

He added that acts of misconduct by students, teachers, headmasters or examination officials should attract swift and appropriate sanctions.

The minister said enforcing discipline was essential to restoring public confidence in Ghana’s education system and maintaining high standards in schools.

He urged education authorities to ensure that disciplinary measures were applied consistently across the country to deter misconduct and promote accountability.
