Man invokes Antoa, Akonedi over disputed Bantama NPP election

A viral video showing a man invoking traditional deities against anyone who defies a reported court injunction has intensified tensions following violence that disrupted the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency executive elections in Bantama, in the Ashanti Region.

The video surfaced on Saturday night after chaos erupted at the election venue at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, where unidentified individuals reportedly disrupted voting, destroyed election materials and forced police to intervene.

In the footage, the man, who identified himself as Kwame Poku, is seen breaking an egg and pouring schnapps while invoking the names of traditional deities, including Antoa and Akonedi, and calling for punishment against anyone who proceeds with the disputed election in defiance of the reported court order.

The video has circulated widely on social media, drawing mixed reactions as tensions continue to rise over the party’s internal electoral process.

Saturday’s constituency executive election was reportedly held despite a court injunction seeking to halt the exercise.

Witnesses said a group of unidentified men stormed the polling centre, vandalised ballot boxes and ballot papers, and assaulted election officials overseeing the process.

One election official sustained injuries and was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Police officers deployed to provide security restored order after the disruption.
