The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, on Sunday condemned the shooting of a young man during a confrontation between a joint military and police team and residents in Kyebi Zongo, Eastern Region.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday (11 July), reportedly involved personnel attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, NAIMOS.

The victim was shot in the leg and is receiving treatment at Kyebi Government Hospital, the MP said in a statement.

“I strongly condemn every form of violence and brutality that endangers the lives and safety of our people,” Dr. Agyemang said, adding that “no community should have to witness such unfortunate scenes.”

He urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and allow state institutions to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The MP called on security agencies to conduct a “thorough, impartial and transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.”

Authorities have not yet released an official account of what led to the confrontation.

“As Member of Parliament, I remain committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace, law and order prevail within our constituency,” Dr. Agyemang said. He also appealed for unity as investigations continue.

NAIMOS is the government body tasked with combating illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana.
