Ghana police have arrested 54 people and seized large quantities of suspected narcotic substances during intelligence-led operations across several suburbs of Kumasi, authorities said on Wednesday.

The operation, carried out by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team (SOT), targeted communities identified as hotspots for drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

Police said the raids were conducted in Atwima-Koforidua, Abuakwa, Sofo Line Lorry Station, Ash Town, Ahwia, Bantama, Aputuogya, Krofrom, Pankrono, Tafo, Twumduase, Krofrom-Colombia and Alarba.

The suspects comprise 49 men and five women. Police said they include 38 Ghanaians and 11 Malian nationals who are being investigated for various alleged drug-related offences.

Officers recovered quantities of suspected Tramadol tablets of different strengths, hundreds of sealed packages containing dried leaves believed to be narcotic substances, and materials allegedly used in processing narcotics.

Police also seized 13 bottles of a fruit juice branded “FEMUDE” suspected to contain narcotic substances, 34 narcotics processing materials, 13 pairs of scissors, 11 boxes of assorted foreign cigarettes, 23 mobile phones, two casino jackpot machines and four unregistered motorcycles.

All 54 suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations, according to a police statement. They are expected to be arraigned before court after investigations are completed.

The Ghana Police Service said similar intelligence-led operations would continue across the country as part of efforts to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks and combat related crimes.

“The Service remains resolute in its commitment to identifying, arresting and prosecuting persons engaged in criminal activities,” the statement said.

Police also urged the public to provide credible and timely information to support law enforcement efforts, saying community cooperation remains essential to maintaining public safety and security.
