Health authorities in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region have issued a public health alert following an outbreak of Acute Haemorrhagic Conjunctivitis (AHC), commonly known as Apollo.

The alert, issued by the Principal Optometrist at the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Hospital, Dr Noel Arizi, urged residents to remain vigilant as the highly contagious viral eye infection spreads easily through direct contact with infected eye secretions or contaminated personal items.

According to the hospital, the infection can be transmitted through contaminated hands, towels, tissues, handkerchiefs, cosmetics, eye drops and other personal items shared with infected persons.

Health officials said common symptoms of Apollo include red or bloodshot eyes, excessive tearing or watery discharge, eye pain, irritation or a gritty sensation, swollen eyelids, sensitivity to light, and eye discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together.

Residents have been advised to practise good personal hygiene by washing their hands frequently with soap and clean water, avoiding touching or rubbing their eyes, and refraining from sharing towels, pillows, handkerchiefs, cosmetics or eye drops.

The Municipal Hospital also urged anyone who develops symptoms to stay away from school, work or crowded places to reduce transmission and seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.

Health authorities further cautioned the public against self-medication or the use of unprescribed eye drops, herbal remedies or home treatments without professional medical advice.

“The cooperation of everyone is essential in preventing the spread of Apollo. Practicing good personal hygiene and seeking early medical care will help protect your family and community,” the statement said.

The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Hospital encouraged residents to remain informed, observe all recommended preventive measures and report to the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms, as efforts continue to contain the outbreak.
