Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has backed Carlos Queiroz to remain as head coach of the Black Stars, calling for the experienced Portuguese tactician to be given more time to build on the progress made with the national team.

Queiroz was appointed in April on a short-term contract following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March, taking charge of the team just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the limited preparation period, the 73-year-old guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the tournament in North America, marking the Black Stars’ first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds since the 2010 edition in South Africa.

However, uncertainty has surrounded Queiroz’s future following Ghana’s elimination from the competition.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Mr Adams praised the former Real Madrid manager’s influence on the team and argued that he deserves the opportunity to continue his work.

“We should give Carlos Queiroz the opportunity to stay a bit longer. He has proven that a coach matters,” Mr Adams said.

Ghana began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match but advanced to the Round of 32 after finishing among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Their World Cup journey came to an end after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the knockout stage.

With the tournament concluded, the Black Stars will now shift their focus to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia.

The qualification campaign is scheduled to begin in September.
