Elected executives of the New Patriotic Party  in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency have rejected the party’s decision to annul their recent election, insisting the polls were conducted legally and with full supervision.

Constituency Chairman-elect Kwaku Ofosu says no lawful directive to suspend the election was received from the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday (16 July), Ofosu said the regional committee supervised and authorized every stage of the process, which culminated in the successful conduct of the elections.

He also dismissed claims that a court injunction barred the polls adding that an interim injunction granted by the High Court had expired and was not renewed before voting day.

“It is an incontrovertible fact that the interim injunction granted by the High Court was limited in duration and subsequently expired. No extension or renewal was secured before the constituency elections were conducted,” he stated.

“Consequently, there was no subsisting court order restraining the regional executive committee, the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, delegates, or aspirants from participating in the electoral process.”

The Chairman-elect said the legitimacy of the elections was reinforced by the involvement of state institutions.

“The elections were conducted under the supervision of officials designated by the party, facilitated by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, and secured by the Ghana Police Service. This state institution would not have participated in an exercise that was subject to a valid court order prohibiting its conduct,” he added.

Mr. Ofosu appealed to the NPP national leadership to reverse its decision to annul the results, warning it could undermine democracy within the party.

“Such a decision, if allowed to stand, will undermine the express will of over 1,000 delegates who freely exercised their democratic right to elect their leaders,” he said.

“It will also set a dangerous precedent, whereby duly conducted internal elections can be invalidated without any proving illegality.”

He urged dialogue and the use of the party’s constitutional dispute resolution mechanisms instead of nullification.

“We neither organize nor supervise these elections, we merely presented ourselves before the delegates in accordance with the rules of our party. The delegates spoke freely, and the verdict deserves respect,” Mr. Ofosu said.

The executives called on the national leadership to “uphold the democratic mandate freely conferred on us, preserve the unity of the party, and avoid actions that may unnecessarily divide our grassroots ahead of the crucial 2028 elections.”
