Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has said public confidence is the judiciary’s most valuable asset, stressing that every person appearing before Ghana’s courts must be assured of fair and impartial justice.

Speaking at the launch of a lecture series at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday (16 July) to mark the 150th anniversary of Ghana’s Supreme Court, Baffoe-Bonnie said the judiciary’s strength lies not in its buildings or history but in the trust reposed in it by the Ghanaian people.

“The greatest inheritance of the Supreme Court is not its buildings nor its history, or even its judgments; it is the confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he said.

He added that citizens should remain confident that justice would be administered without discrimination.

“The quiet assurance that when they enter our courts, justice will not ask who they are before listening to what they have to say. May that confidence never fade away; may that trust never be betrayed,” he said.

The Chief Justice said the 150th anniversary celebrations presented an opportunity not only to reflect on the Supreme Court’s history but also to reaffirm its commitment to justice, fairness and the rule of law.

He also acknowledged the role traditional authorities continue to play in resolving disputes and promoting peace within their communities.

The lecture series forms part of activities commemorating 150 years of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
