Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, announcing that 150 second-cycle institutions across the country have been selected for a major rehabilitation programme.

The initiative will cover 112 senior high schools (SHSs) and 38 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, with works expected to address critical infrastructure deficits and improve teaching and learning conditions.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 20, Mr Iddrisu said the rehabilitation exercise would include the renovation of existing facilities and the expansion of infrastructure in beneficiary schools.

“There will be a rehabilitation of 112 schools across the country. Thirty-eight TVET schools, so in all, 150 schools will benefit from our rehabilitation,” he said.

He explained that the project would involve the construction and expansion of key facilities, including dormitories, classroom blocks and science laboratories, to accommodate increasing enrolment and enhance the quality of education.

“We will see some expansion in their infrastructure, by way of a dormitory, classroom and laboratories,” he added.

Mr Iddrisu said the intervention forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the implementation of the Free SHS programme by improving infrastructure in second-cycle institutions.

He noted that addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges remained critical to creating a conducive learning environment and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the flagship education policy.
