Ghanaian sprint star Abdul-Rasheed Saminu made an emphatic start to his 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign by comfortably booking his place in the men’s 100m semi-finals after winning his opening heat on Monday.
The national record holder produced a season’s best performance, crossing the finish line in 10.01 seconds to secure first place and automatic qualification for the next round.
Saminu finished well ahead of Orphee Topize, who came home in 10.38 seconds, while Mc Kish Compton placed third in 10.51 seconds.
Regarded as one of the leading contenders for the men’s 100m gold medal, the Ghanaian displayed both composure and speed as he safely progressed without being fully extended.
His impressive run adds to Ghana’s growing hopes of success on the track, with Saminu looking in strong form as the competition intensifies.
The Ghanaian will return to action on Tuesday for the semi-finals, where he will be aiming to build on his excellent start and secure a place in the final as he continues his pursuit of Commonwealth Games glory.
