Ghana’s Black Satellites suffered a disappointing start to their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign after falling 4-2 to defending champions Nigeria in their Group B opener at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Monday.

The Flying Eagles made a flying start to the contest, taking the lead early and putting Ghana under immediate pressure.

However, the Black Satellites responded positively as captain Kelvin Nkrumah played a key role in the equaliser, delivering a precise pass that Mohammed Zaidan converted with composure to level the score.

Nigeria quickly regained control of the match, restoring their advantage through a deflected strike before adding a third from the penalty spot.

The defending champions headed into the halftime break with a commanding 3-1 lead after capitalising on Ghana’s defensive lapses.

Maxwell Konadu’s side emerged from the interval with renewed determination and found a way back into the game when Nkrumah confidently converted a penalty to reduce the deficit to 3-2, giving the Black Satellites hope of staging a comeback.

Those hopes were eventually dashed late in the match after Nigeria were awarded a penalty of their own. The Flying Eagles made no mistake from the spot, restoring their two-goal cushion and securing a deserved 4-2 victory.

Despite the defeat, Ghana showed flashes of quality in attack and created several promising moments that will encourage the technical team ahead of the remaining group fixtures.

The Black Satellites will now shift their focus to a must-win encounter against Burkina Faso on Thursday before wrapping up their Group B campaign against Togo on Sunday, August 2.

Although Ghana have already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as tournament hosts, the ongoing WAFU B U-20 Championship provides an important platform for the team’s preparation and development as they continue to build towards the continental showpiece.
