Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has questioned the long-term future of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, insisting Ghana needs a younger, ambitious coach with the hunger to achieve success rather than one nearing the end of his managerial career.

Following the dismissal of Otto Addo, the experienced Portuguese coach was appointed on a short-term contract with less than three months to prepare the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the limited preparation time and criticism over his defensive approach, Queiroz guided Ghana to the Round of 32, marking the Black Stars’ first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage since 2010.

Speaking on Sports Page on Adom TV with host Nana Kweku Mensah Kaninja on Monday, July 27, George Afriyie argued that defensive football alone is unlikely to deliver major honours.

“No coach who adopts defensive tactics wins trophies. If we keep Carlos Queiroz for one or two years, we’ll eventually sack him. What motivation does he have to win a trophy for Ghana?” he said.

“If he were working for the government, he would already be retired. We need a challenging and ambitious coach—someone who wants to achieve something in his career, prove something, and not someone who is nearing the end of his career,” Afriyie added.

The former GFA vice president disclosed that before Queiroz’s appointment, he had advised that Ghana needed an experienced coach to steer the team through the difficult period following Otto Addo’s departure.

According to him, his recommendation was based on the limited time available before the World Cup, although many people misunderstood his position.

Afriyie, however, believes the Ghana Football Association should have gone a step further by appointing a coach capable of leading the team beyond the World Cup and building a long-term project.

Attention has now shifted to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire and Somalia.

The qualifying campaign begins in September, with Queiroz’s future expected to be decided in the coming days.
