“They told Burna Boy I was sleeping with his girlfriend” – Shatta Wale explains fallout

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has opened up about the collapse of his friendship with Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy, claiming the rift was caused by false allegations spread by former members of his management team.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Shatta Wale said Burna Boy was among the few Nigerian artistes who would personally contact him before travelling to Ghana, often asking him to receive him at the airport.

The “On God” hitmaker said he welcomed Burna Boy warmly whenever he visited, providing him with accommodation, vehicles and other support throughout his stay.

“I was treating Burna Boy in Ghana like a king. I gave him a house, gave him cars, anything he needed. He wasn’t spending money in Ghana,” he said.

According to Shatta Wale, the friendship deteriorated after he dismissed some members of his management team, whom he accused of attempting to damage his relationships with influential people.

He alleged that the former associates spread false rumours accusing him of having affairs with the wives and girlfriends of some of his wealthy friends.

Shatta Wale claimed one of those allegations reached Burna Boy, with the former team members falsely telling the Nigerian artiste that he had been involved with Burna Boy’s girlfriend during one of the singer’s visits to Ghana.

“They told Burna Boy that I was sleeping with his girl he brought to Ghana, and he just believed it,” he said.

The dancehall musician said he only realised Burna Boy had accepted the allegations after repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered.

He added that he even reached out to Burna Boy’s mother, whom he described as family, in an effort to reconnect with the singer.

Reflecting on their friendship, Shatta Wale said he had always admired Burna Boy’s success and regularly congratulated him as his international career flourished.

“I still love him. I watch his streams and I’m proud of him. That’s my brother,” he said.

Although disappointed that Burna Boy never gave him the opportunity to explain his side of the story, Shatta Wale said he harbours no resentment towards the Nigerian star.

“I thank God that God has put Burna somewhere, but it hurts me that he didn’t listen to me to explain what really happened. I could never do that to his girlfriend because he’s my brother,” he said.

Shatta Wale said the experience had made him more cautious about the people he allows into his inner circle, adding that he now keeps only a small group of trusted associates around him.

Despite years of silence between them, the award-winning musician ended the interview by expressing his love and respect for Burna Boy and wishing him continued success.
