Team Ghana boxer Desmond Pappoe has withdrawn from the boxing competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after suffering a shoulder injury, the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana (CGA Ghana) has confirmed.

Pappoe’s withdrawal comes ahead of his scheduled quarter-final bout, ending a promising campaign that had raised hopes of a medal finish for Ghana at the Games.

According to CGA Ghana, the boxer underwent a medical assessment by Team Ghana’s medical team following the injury, with the evaluation determining that he was not fit to continue competing.

The decision to withdraw him was reached after consultations among the medical team, coaching staff and Games officials, who agreed that protecting Pappoe’s health and ensuring his long-term recovery was the priority.

CGA Ghana described the development as a major setback for the boxer and the team, noting that Pappoe had shown impressive form and was determined to progress to the semi-finals.

The Association commended him for his dedication, hard work and commitment throughout his preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

It also assured him of its full support during his recovery, expressing confidence that he would return to the ring stronger and continue representing Ghana at future international competitions.

“Team Ghana believes Desmond Pappoe will make a full recovery and return to the ring stronger, with the opportunity to continue representing Ghana at future international competitions,” the Association said.

CGA Ghana also praised the team’s medical personnel for their swift and professional response in managing the injury, reiterating that the welfare of athletes remains its top priority.

Although Pappoe’s withdrawal is a blow to Ghana’s medal hopes in boxing, Team Ghana has vowed to remain focused on its objectives as athletes continue competing in other events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
