The United States has reminded all its citizens, including dual nationals, that they are legally required to enter and leave the country using a valid U.S. passport.
In a public travel advisory, U.S. authorities stressed that the requirement applies to all American citizens, including children who also hold citizenship in another country.
The advisory cautioned that dual-national U.S. citizens are not permitted to use a foreign passport to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). It noted that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels ESTA applications submitted by American dual nationals.
The U.S. also urged its citizens and nationals living abroad to ensure they travel with a valid U.S. passport whenever they plan to visit the country.
It encouraged travellers whose passports have expired or are close to expiring to renew them before embarking on their journey.
Additionally, the advisory reminded travellers that passports should generally remain valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into a foreign country to help avoid travel disruptions.
