The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results for 620,243 candidates who sat the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates in Ghana.

WAEC said in a press statement on Wednesday (29 July) that results had been dispatched to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education for onward distribution to schools. Candidates can also access their results online via the Council’s official website, http://www.waecgh.org.

According to WAEC, a total of 620,243 candidates from 20,789 schools wrote the exam at 2,237 centres nationwide. The figure comprised 304,415 males and 315,828 females.

The Council said this included 136 candidates with visual impairment, 282 with hearing assessment needs, and 510 with other test accommodation needs. A total of 3,601 candidates were absent.

Malpractice sanctions

Following investigations into irregularities detected during the conduct and marking of scripts, WAEC’s Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions at its meeting on 21 July.

The Council cancelled the subject results of 496 candidates and the entire results of 105 candidates. It also withheld subject results of 119 candidates and entire results of 48 candidates.

In addition, WAEC said subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny. It said those results may be cancelled or released depending on the outcome of investigations by August 31, 2026.

Candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld have been directed to visit https://irreg.waecgh.org to check reasons and next steps. Heads of schools may use their results listing logins for the same purpose.

Caution on fraudsters

WAEC cautioned stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to “upgrade results for a fee,” saying its results are secured and can be authenticated.

The Council expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, heads of schools, supervisors, invigilators and examiners for supporting the conduct of the examination and release of results.
